Pitch & Put

OK, Hello there guys, it’s been a long time.

We have loads to discuss, don’t worry I haven’t been Procrastinating that much! I have in fact been a busy little Bee. I’m currently putting the finishing touches to the sequel to The Break before it gets whisked away for proof reading and editing, with, I might add, a much more reliable person. I still get angry about all the mistakes in The Break but hey it’s all a learning curve and thankfully it hasn’t affected the narrative and you guys have all loved it, (So you tell writingme anyway and that actually makes me ecstatic!!)

I’m also working on a New project which I am about to start pitching to agents and publishes. Don’t worry I’m not abandoning my Indie roots but I thought I would give it a whirl! The new project’s current working title is “The Jenson West Journals” and that’s all I’m going to tease for the time being but watch this space!

Finally I also have a third project on the go, something completely different. For those of you who have known me for many years or have actually read my rantings on this site you will know that many many moons ago when one was a mere teenager I had some success with a screenplay, sadly this never amounted to anything but I originally started seriously writing by writing Screenplays.

Its funny what stays with you over the years but the reason I started off writing scripts and screenplays came from something my English teacher said to me in Year 9. Her name was Mandy Barfoot and the assignment she gave was based on the book we were studying at the time, William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, we had to take a scene of the play and re-write it in modern day English an assignment which prompted my love of Shakespeare. Incidentally, My Favorite became Macbeth, which I’m sure will surprise nobody. Insanity, blood, guts, medieval battles, witchcraft lets face it it’s got it all but I digress!

So I spent ages on this assignment and when the day came to get our grade for it I did pretty well and Miss Barfoot turned around and said to me “Well Done, that’s the best piece of work I’ve seen from you, have you thought about writing more scripts” And that is how it started, so It seemed a natural progression from that one inspired sentence to the success I nearly had with Channel 4 when I was 18 years old.

So yes you’ve guessed it my third current project is script based but not for the screen. I keep telling anyone who will listen to me, I’d love to be in a musical, I love them, I can’t help it, it’s my guilty pleasure! So I thought I would try my hand at writing a musical, don’t ask me how it’s going though as I’m only in the beginning stages I’ve pretty much sorted out the narrative it’s figuring out the rest now, mainly being the music side of it!!

The problem with starting lots of different projects is time. I don’t know about anybody else but when I feel inspired I want the finished product in front of me NOW, NOW, NOW. I tend to work really quickly and then when I look over it at a later date think what a pile of …… (Please insert word of your choice!) and that’s why I went back and re-wrote the first half of The Sequel, working title of which is still, Concordia, at the moment. So because I was so eager to continue the story, the ideas that came out on the page were a little mismatched to say the least!

So the next thing I really need to start seriously considering is a cover for Concordia, I still love the idea I cover DSCF3985design something myself but my artistic skills are seriously lacking. So I guess it’s between do I look for a graphic designer and do something digital or should I look for an artist/illustrator and go with something more intricate.

So I’ll leave you with this question, what do you look for in a book cover? I know they say don’t judge a book by its cover but let’s face it it’s the first thing that catch’s our eye, not the synopsis, not the title but the design.

Well The Weather Has Inspired All Sorts Of Idea’s

20130119_110305I had another encounter with Bambi’s Dad this week again he didn’t seem very impressed that I was sharing the same road and breathing the same air as he was! I have to admit he really is magnificent but I did feel more sorry for him this time than apprensive as it was the beginning of the week just as the snow had started I don’t think he appreciated the cold thick white stuff much. To be honest by Wednesday I was rather bored by the weather, the snow lasted one day and was a bit to light and fluffy it could’ve done with Manning Up to be fair and in true typical British weather style it kind of started to vanish as quickly as it appeared but today, out of nowhere it seems to have come back fighting. I left my home yesterday morning to set off for work at ten to seven and it was snowing, it was still snowing when I got home, I’m a little concerned I’m not going to be able to get out of the front door tomorrow!! It’s like Bambi’s dad stared at me so hard he’s cursed me to be snowed in!!

I guess being snowed in is a perfect excuse to find the time to finally spend some quality time IMG_0018writing. My efforts have been so sporadtic of late but today I actually wrote a whole new chapter for the sequel that I intend to slot in somewhere in the first six chapters, which I’m quite pleased with so hopefully by the end of this weekend I will be able to say I have done my first draft re-writes it’s time to let someone else have a ganders! Although with my track record of late I doubt that!

20130119_110137I have had my hands full recently with the new edition to the family, Sheldon The Puppy!! He is such a cliche, he chases his tail, he chases cars (well tries too), he’s so funny, although when we took him on his first proper walk we also discovered he does not like sheep or pigs… I’m seeing a kids book in there somewhere!! Maybe I’ll try children’s fiction after I’ve finished the sequel I have niece’s and nephew’s they could be my focus group!!!

Stalked by Bambi’s Parents

So how’s 2013 treablossomting everyone so far? I have to say I am completely baffled that it’s only the 6th day of the year and there is already blossom on a tree in our garden, very odd! And yesterday I was actually gardening because it was that mild out.

Something else that always baffled me, which kind of ties in with my little road rage rant not so long ago is people who only have one head light on their cars, that vexes me! About 75% of my journey home from work consists of no street lights so when a car is coming towards me with only one light it angers me and I’ve always wandered why the hell don’t they just get it fixed, a bulb is like a fiver which is nothing compared to another car smacking head first into you because he/she didn’t realise you were a car. Well the answer is simple, why would you know unless someone told you? And that’s when I realised I’d joined the world of hypocrisy. As I drove in to the work car park on Thursday morning, a bloke on a bike followed me in. A little weird I thought as it’s a private car wickedwitchpark, what was even weirder was the fact he was a litte parculiar, he was rather a little reminicent of Rab C Nesbitt, now take that image and imagine Rab C Nesbitt riding the Wicked Witch of the West’s Bicycle (obviously before she was bright green in the land of OZ, I’m talking the kansas version!). He watched and waited for me to reverse in to my spot, also creepy as he flashed me a creepy smile which made me think of the guy from the Goonies and then rode up to my passenger side window, which I wound down whilst having 999 ready to dial on my mobile. Then the words came out of his mouth, “Did you know you’ve got a head light out”. NOOOOOOOOOOOO, I’d driven to work in the dark with one bloody head light, I couldn’t believe it. I’d also made the most hideous assumptions about the dude on the bike who did a good deed by informing me, other wise I would never have known, well probably untill I’d had the worst look and the police pulled me over but luckily that never happened. While I’m on the subject of other things that vex me while driving I realy should mention suicidal animals, seriously I’m driving along this country road, complete with horror movie quality house and out of nowhere a huge stag comes running out of the adjacent wood, I slam on my brakes and he just stands there starring at me before casually strolling into the field across the other side of the road, I mean the cheek, I nearly kill Bambi’s dad because he had some crazy death wish and then he has the nerve to give me the “Stare”, three mornings later on the same big-stag-winterstretch of road, the same thing happens only this time it’s not Bambi’s Dad it’s his Mum, again I slam on my brakes and she stands there and stares at me, clearly the stags wife I’m guessing, then something I really didn’t expect, fifteen other Deer came out of nowhere and began to cross the road behind her, all the time whilst she stood there starring at me, once the last one had crossed she then followed, it really was, truely a spectacular sight.

I have to say it’s moments like that which have really helped with the sequel, I’ve re-written whole chapters purely because I’ve been inspried by my new environment, I would say a change of scenery is definately good for the writter in me. Not that I’m saying everyone should pack up and move to the country but for all you writers out there, I would say a change of scenery once in a while definately helps the Writers block!

New Year…. Bar Humbug!!

Well I guess as it’s the last day of 2012 it would be rude not to post something!

Anybody who knows me well will know I hate New Years Eve, yep I am the New Year Party Pooper, I1337577_wine_swirl stay in, enjoy a glass of wine and indulge in an early night, I don’t even stay up till 12. I’ve just never seen the fascination, the moment the clock strikes midnight you still have the same issues as 10 seconds ago, you make New Years Resolutions you can’t keep and just get so drunk you don’t even rememebr the party anyway and spend the first day of the New Year hungover so bad you think you’re dying!!

However I do take the opportunity at New Year to, not look forward because nobody knows what will happen from one day to the next but to evaluate the year just gone. It’s never what I expect so it’s always cool to look back and say “I made it through another year in one peice, I’m happy”.

So what happened in 2012, obviously the Olympics were here in the UK and being a crazy tennis fan I watched as Andy Murray won the gold and then later in the year won his first grandslam! The Dark Knight Rises finally arrived, one of the best comic adaptation trilogy’s EVER. Then personally, I bought a house (with my partner obviously!), got a new car, a promotion, Self published my first DSCF3985novel and we added a new edition to our crazy household and got a puppy!! So to be fair even though there was a lot of negative’s and struggles and all that stuff in 2012, I can’t complain really!! They say it’s about the journey and to me the journey is always, in some ways more valuable than the end goal.

So I just wanted to post today, not to complain about my views of New Year but to wish you all an amazing 2013 and I hope the journey of the next 365 days inspires you and also to thank you once again for all your support, I will try and get the sequel out next year!!!

Crazy Road Rage Outbursts

I hate rush hour traffic, for some reason between the hours of 7am-8:30am and 5pm – 6pm is the time for idiots and not just idiot car drivers where you wonder how much the test examiner took in dirty money to say “Yeah you’ve past” when they are the worst driver in the universe. Of course I mean them too but also farm vehicles, oh my gosh, get them out of my way NOW. I know they to are off to work their fields and they have a job to do to but then why the hell did the person who invented the tractor not invent them to go at the same speed as everyone else because seriously 20mph on a 60mph road stuck behind a tractor for 10 miles has seriously made me angry before I’ve even got in to work and had my first Hulk moment of the day And they know they’re holding up all the traffic and they enjoy it We pass several lay by’s on the way they could pull in for 5minutes and let some of the traffic past but NO, instead they sit there chuckling to themselves and you can’t over take because they’re so huge one wheel is as big as your whole car so naturally it’s taking up the whole road. Bullies, that’s what they are; tractors are the Bullies of the road. Then there’s the cyclists, the athletic, environmentally friendly “Serious cyclists” with there proper gear on and suit neatly folder in their rucksack on their backs. The cyclist that believe they could win the Tour De France and cycle miles and miles to work every morning. They are just as bad as Tractors, they hog the whole lane, peddling at the speed of light, their little legs going round so fast it’s like watching a hamster in his wheel and they actually think they’re racing you, granted they’re traveling around 25mph and if I attempted that I’d be dead but still, this does not impress me cycle people, I don’t care that you think you’re the bionic man and could outrun a small moped (or hairdryer), just get in to the cycle lane where you belong and watch where you’re bloody going before a tractor comes along and runs you down. Then to top of your hour long commute the local radio station has started playing Christmas songs. Now I love Christmas (despite the bar humbug persona!) but it’s not even December yet and there’s Christmas light switch ons going on in town centres, there’s even a house in the next village along with lights on their house already (they went up last week!) IT’S TO SOON PEOPLE. Maybe the middle to the end of next week but beginning the first week of November…. NO.

The thing is the moment you see the first sign of Christmas it then becomes one big mad panic because you realise, well I realise, that I am so disorganised and I have about 7 weeks to buy and afford in the first place, presents for what seems like the whole world then there’s Christmas food, what to have on what days? Who’s coming over on what days? Who eats what? Then how much wrapping paper do we need, when should we get the tree, when should we put the tree up (NOT in November) all this stress added on to your existing stress of work and other financial responsibilities and you have the entire month of December slowly giving you a heart attack so why on Earth do people want to start it all in November??? And then when it actually snows in December it makes the Tractors and the Bionic cyclists even more dangerous!!! GRR

Confession – My traffic jam filled commute this morning was made more enjoyable by singing along to Mariah Carey’s All I want For Christmas in a style of performing live at Wembley Stadium – HELP ME they are converting me slowly

All Future Ramblings Are Of My Own Opinion

So I’ve been kind of sucky of late with this whole blogging business haven’t I? Don’t worry folks no answer needed! I go AWOL I come back with a blog promising not to do it again so naturally I go AWOL again. I wish I had some amazing excuse prepared like I’ve finished my polished version of my sequel to The Break and it’s going to be out soon but that would be a lie as after finishing reading my first draft I decided to scrap the lot and start again, a hundred and two thousand words deleted in a flash. Best way really I want something fresh and new I don’t want old ideas to taint the new ones. Alternatively I wish I could tell you I had an entirely new amazing project completed my water lilies, my 9th symphony, my thinker, my Bohemian Rhapsody but who am I kidding I have one chapter of a new idea and another four chapters of a different idea to that.

The truth is I have an attention span of a small child (and some might argue a mentality to match) but there are just too many distractions around me over the last six months to be able to really sink my teeth in to my writing and blog about it. Then I got to wondering about why I set up the blog in the first place and concluded that it was initially only to promote my debut self published novel The Break but as I look about over my previous posts I realised I would blog about more than just that process, then I realised I like ranting aimlessly to the void of cyber space about nothing particular. I did after all call my blog The Eccentric Ramblings of an Amateur and so I present to you a new look, I was going to go with a new title to The Eccentric Raging’s of an Amateur but as my rage would only last for around two sentences and then turn in to ramblings I thought the title was well suited as it was!

So with this new look WILL come more frequent ramblings but not just of the writing kind this time, I’m just going to ramble and you guys can read along or not this time, they’ll be no holding back, please note all ramblings will be of my own opinions but feel free to join in being opinionated.

So on the subject of rambling and being opinionated I offer you this simple piece of advice in the event that something makes you extremely angry, engage your Brain and think before reacting, unlike myself who has just sent a complaint E-mail to the NHS without consulting the person who has been affected by their appallingness. In fact I’ve never really been trained in the art that is think before you act/speak which I’m sure one day will land me in some serious knee deep Shite but until that day I’m here for entertainment purposes and pre written speeches!!! Besides surely holding back results in missed opportunities does it not?

Anyway to conclude this eccentric “I’m Back For Good” blog I’m rewarding all my faithful readers/followers with cheapness!!! All the ranting aside I do actually plan to have the Sequel to The Break (Working title Concordia) out for next spring. I thought it would be a good idea to get yourselves acquainted with the first book first and so if you boogie on down to your Amazon Kindle store you will see it is currently retailing at 77p for you UK folks and a groovy 99c for you USA chaps or if your more iTunes you can hop on over there where it’s 99p. This will be the case until the end of the year, have a read let me know what you think, leave a review and all that Jazz and before you say anything newbie’s I am aware there are some grammatical/spelling errors(check out previous rantings for an explanation)

But cheers for the support and cheers for hanging in there with me in my absences’ it’s been a crazy 2012 and it’s not quite over yet!

First Draft Entertainment

Hello there, trust me when I mentioned in my previous blog that after completing my first draft of the sequel to The Break I was going to have a break from writing before going back to it, I didn’t actually mean I would also be having another long break from blogging also!! Seriously I don’t know how some of these guys who I follow do it. Some post everyday, some can post twice a day, I know I blogged about time management but considering the crazy distractions over the last couple of months I have to admit no amount of time management can help you plan for spanners in the works. So from illness & home improvements to a fourth birthday celebration and a new born niece things have been a little mental.

However, I won’t lie mental has been a wicked distraction as it has only been in the last few days I have managed to break out that first draft. I love reading my first drafts I find it incredibly entertaining, so far I’m only a third of the way through and I’ve already decided to ditch the entire first chapter and decide to not kill off the person I’d killed off and kill someone else instead!!!

One of my favorite things to do when I’m ripping apart a first draft is invent a sound track, certain songs just put me in a certain mood for writing specific scenes. In fact I thought it would be an awesome idea to add to the Book’s with extra’s plan, for those of you who haven’t been around, many moons ago I asked why don’t books have have extra’s like DVD’s & Blu Rays So why not a sound track aswell, it would be so cool to realese the sequal of The Break with a sound track of music which lent to the inspiration of certain scences…. How Cool???? Maybe it’s just me!! Besides that just opens up a whole load of copyright issues which I could tell you right now I couldn’t aford to licence!!!

So we have a few new characters floating around in the Sequel, six in total to be precise, obviously characters that play a key role in the narrative not your average coffee shop owner!!!!!! As you know I was rather concerned previously about enjoying writing the new characters too much that I would gradually focus more on them than the ones that the story is actually about. I no longer have this worry, after now completing the first draft I found that the balance just comes naturally. I think it comes from knowing your material, especially since the sequel visits a completely fictional environment, as the place is unfamiliar and the reader can’t relate to it you find yourself using your characters more effectively than just telling the story so the challenge was never introducing new characters the challenge became introducing the new environment but by using the charcaters I was able to interpret that world from my own head through them to you!! I’m sure when you read it you’ll no what I mean!!! But don’t get your hopes up we’re a long way away from publishing still.

I’ve been thinking about the cover and as you know I keep going on about wanting to learn to draw and keep saying I was going to post something to show you. This is so not going to happen people!!! My drawing skills are reminisent of something I did in Primary school age 6!!!! So naturally I will be hiring a professional!!!
So on that note I’m off to do some more re-writes providing the sun doesn’t come out and I get distracted by the garden again!!! Just wanted to let you guys know I’m still alive!! and the sequel is still in the works!!!

Doesn’t Time Fly

My new view from our bedroom window!

I’m back people and I must say it doesn’t feel like it’s been nearly a month since I warned you all I would need to go radio silent due to the big move, which did not go as planned but we’re in now that’s all that matters, so people keep saying, I say, how do you sue a solicitor but that story is for another day! On a more positive note I’m now surrounded by the most inspiring scenery, I’ve seen my first barn owl that wasn’t in a book or on TV, in fact it likes to land on our back fence now and again!!! and I’m loving the rural life, I can’t wait to own chickens once the jungle of the garden has been sorted!!!

It’s very strange in this day and age not having the internet around all of a sudden, I mean I’ve been able to check my e-mails on my smart phone (modern technology amazes me!) but it hasn’t been the same to just sit down at the computer and surf. I do however find it disturbing how much we rely upon it, it has quite obviously become part of everyday life. We ended up using a family members computer so we could set up all our utility bills online for the new house. This was because it was the fastest way to do it, when we phoned these places you had to go through a zillion automated messages, press 1 for this press 3 for that by the time you’d finished punching in numbers you were left on hold for half an hour before you could speak to a human being, yet on the internet we’d set up all our utility bills in 20 mins. It’s almost like the company’s don’t want to speak to you anymore and set up all these barriers to force you to do it online!!

It wasn’t like I didn’t have plenty of distractions to deal with in my absent weeks from the blogging world, there was Wimbledon, where I cried when Andy Murray made it to the final and cried some more when he lost to Federer in the final. Yep I admit I cried at sports, is there a group I can attend for this??? Well there’s still the Olympics and next year’s Wimbledon!!

However as I set up this blog to promote/discuss my writing projects I guess the biggest thing I should share with you all is I now have a completed first draft of my sequel, granted it’s a little all over the place as first drafts tend to be!! but now I’ll just do what I always do put it away for a few weeks and go back to it with a fresh head ready to rip it to shreds!! I think the most difficult stage of any writing project is to be able to go over that completed first draft and be objective, I mean you’ve spent weeks and months creating this baby you’ve poured your entire soul into it and then when you re-read it in full you realise, actually chapter 6 is crap, I don’t like how that character got from A to B in chapter 12, why did I write character X into the story she has to go she’s useless and also to think about the reader as opposed to how you read it. I find this the hardest because its hard to get the balance between being a little cryptic to keep your audience intrigued and making it way to over complicated that it confuses your audience, alternatively you’ve dumbed it down so much you realise you’ve written a book for primary school kids!!!!! I’ve also managed to gather some great material for the book with extras idea I had a while back, I have several alternative endings I would like to try out so naturally they’ve all gone in the folder for that project.

Anyway, naturally now I’m back and I’ve finished my first draft, you can expect to see more posts ranting about similar things from the beginning of the year, I need to start thinking about cover design and most importantly who I can go to for editing this time around so I don’t get conned again as I did with The Break!

Happy Father’s Day…. Fix My Roof Please!!!

I know I’ve been AWOL for a while… Again! even my Mother said to me today “You haven’t blogged for ages Kerry” in that disapproving “Mum Tone”, I mean she even put my name at the end of the sentence, I hate it when people use your name at the end of a sentence it always makes the tone seem much more serious and believe me I don’t often do serious!!! So as I’ve been told off by my mother here I am!!!!

I would firstly like to point out even though I’ve been some what quiet on the blogging front I have not been completely lazy! Shortly after my last post/Rant! We finally had notice on a completion date for the house. So in a few short days we move in to our new home, oh my gosh we’re going to be home owners, how grown up! I can definitely say goodbye to my crazy, spontaneous days now!!! Anyway we have been frantically packing up the last of our belongs which always sounds easier to do than actually doing it, the reason being I found all my original drafts for The Break, I’m talking even before I decided to write a complete first draft or write detailed character bios, I’m talking random pieces of paper from about three years ago when I would jot down three or four paragraphs and say to myself “That would make a good plot twist, I’ll keep that to one side so i can use it one day” and then I would obviously lose it down the side of the couch or in a book my mad scientist better half was reading because it was suddenly a great idea to use it as a book mark!!! Anyway I would then have to stop packing to make sure this time I did put it somewhere safe as it is so becoming part of my novel with extras idea. Then knowing we now have little time before we move out, I wanted to get to a pretty safe place in my current project, the sequel to The Break, so when I went back to it I wouldn’t be completely lost. So trust me I have been working!!

So today is obviously Father’s Day and as I blogged about Mother’s Day it seems appropriate to only do the same about dear old Dad. So it was round to my parents house for Sunday lunch. Now, let me tell you Sunday lunches at my parents house are Amazing my mother cooks the most amazingly huge roast dinner, trust me, you have one of my Mother’s Sunday Lunches you don’t need to eat again until the following Sunday. So off we trot (actually I drove) to Ma & Pa’s. Now my dad is pretty chilled out so there we find him chilling on the decking when we arrive wearing a new top my sister had brought him, now being Father’s Day it should be a about Dad right? Wrong, it’s all about getting Dad to fix your flat roof on the utility of you new house, so out come the pictures, dimensions, material recommendations, what we need to get, when he can come over and fix it, what other cool things can he do in the new house, so naturally the least I could offer to do was take little sis to work so he could have a couple of beers with dinner!!!!

So as you can see amongst all the excitement of packing & writing and begging my dad to sort out our DIY issues I haven’t had the time to blog which seems a little crazy when I recently blogged about figuring out how to manage my time!!! But I should warn you I have no choice but to go radio silent for a while after today as we have yet to activate any sort of broadband at the new house so we will be without the internet for a couple of weeks, unless you count my phone but I don’t know about you guys but I find blogging on a mobile device just isn’t the same. Although no internet is probably going to send me insane, oh well it gives me and the better half a chance to continue our on going Scrabble championship, I believe it current score is Author 16 – Mad Scientist 19 so I am trailing at the minute maybe I can change that over two weeks!!!
